What is upper GI endoscopy?

Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy uses a flexible camera to examine the oesophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestine. It helps investigate symptoms, identify inflammation or bleeding, take biopsies, and perform selected treatments.

Investigate symptoms

Endoscopy may be advised for persistent heartburn, swallowing difficulty, vomiting, upper-abdominal pain, anaemia, or digestive bleeding.

Obtain tissue samples

Small biopsies can be taken through the scope to evaluate inflammation, infection, coeliac disease, or suspicious areas.

Treat selected problems

Tools passed through the scope can control bleeding, widen narrowing, remove foreign bodies, or treat selected lesions.

Can I drive after sedation?
